Configuration files

Bella Commander keeps its settings in plain text files (TOML), which you can edit with any editor. They are created on the first start with every option, its default and an explanation written in them as comments.

Where they are

macOS Windows Linux
Settings ~/.config/bcmd/ %APPDATA%\bcmd\ (C:\Users\you\AppData\Roaming\bcmd) ~/.config/bcmd/ (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/bcmd)
License and logs ~/Library/Application Support/bcmd/ %LOCALAPPDATA%\bcmd\data\ ~/.local/share/bcmd/ (or $XDG_DATA_HOME/bcmd)

~ is your home folder. The command palette opens the settings files directly in your editor.

The settings folder

File Opened with What is in it
settings.toml Edit settings (⌘, / Ctrl+,) look, panes, terminal, editor, updates, global hotkey, your own commands, multi-rename presets: see Settings
keymap.toml Edit keymap (⌘K ⌘S / Ctrl+K Ctrl+S) the key preset and your own keys: see Keys
favorites.toml Edit favorites the favorite folders of the sidebar, in groups if you like: see Customize
state.toml (written by the app) what Bella Commander remembers: open tabs, column widths, window layout, recent folders, the last search. Not meant for editing
undo.toml (written by the app) the last file operations, so ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z works after a restart

The data folder

File What is in it
license.toml when the trial started, your license key and this computer's activation
logs/ log files, and a crash report if Bella Commander ever crashes; useful when you report a problem

Nothing is sent anywhere: the only connections Bella Commander makes are the license activation and the update check.

Changing a file

  1. Open the file from the command palette (or in any editor).
  2. Change it and save.
  3. Run Reload settings from the command palette (or restart). It reads settings.toml, keymap.toml and favorites.toml again.

A mistake (an unknown option, a value out of range, a key that does not exist) shows in the status line, and the last working settings stay in use, so nothing breaks.

Back to the defaults: delete the file (or a line in it) and reload; a missing file is written again with the defaults, a missing line takes its default value.

Moving to another computer: copy the settings folder. The license is moved separately, see License.
